Hi Thrivers,
Pardon the long gap in posting here. We've been very active on Facebook, and post our monthly updates on our site (http://thethriveproject.org) but haven't been here so much lately. Would YOU like to be the Thrive blogmaster/mistress? Let us know!

JUNE!

Tuesday, June 7th, 7pm
DOING YOUR WORK: some tricks to increase productivity,
reduce stress, and rebuild (your totally internet-shattered) focus
A workshop, demonstration and discussion about how to focus and work on the stuff in your life that needs working on. Making things is hard enough as it is. Don’t make it harder through disorganization, stress, inattention and busywork. In this workshop we will talk specifically about:
- How to keep your email from running your life
- How to create and manage a to-do list so that you aren’t stressed about what you need to do
- How to have focused time and space so you can actually do what you need to do
If you have a notebook computer, bring it. If you have a notebook-
notebook, you could bring that too. Or Thrive will provide.

Workshop leader Matthew Latkiewicz is a writer and web developer. His work has appeared in McSweeney’s, Boing Boing, Techland, kottke.org, Grub Street, and WIRED. He also started The Lady Killigrew CafĂ© in Montague, MA with his partner Sarah Reid.

Last Night @ Thrive: GCC Spring Sampler on Engineering

Hi Thrivers!

Yesterday we had Open Hours from 3-7. Thrivers came in to work on their writing, and talked about coping with unemployment.

At 7 we had the second of our GCC Spring Sampler Series.

First we heard from Herb Hentz, the Director of Admissions at GCC, and he answered a lot of our questions about the school. Did you know that almost all of GCC's programs offer open enrollment? This means that you don't have to compete with other applicants for a spot!

Herb also told us about an exciting new initiative GCC is starting up in collaboration with the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. GCC recently started up a Food Pantry located on campus which is open to the public as well as to GCC students. If you need to supplement your weekly groceries, go to the Admissions Office on campus and they'll help you get set up.

After we talked with Herb, we got to hear from the co-chair of the Engineering Science department at GCC. She talked about the ins-and-outs of the profession, and explained why GCC's program is so great. Engineering students at GCC can proceed directly to a program at UMass as a third-year student! She left us a ton of great material about the Engineering program, so come in and check it all out.

The third GCC Spring Sampler is coming up on May 18--the head of the Physiology & Anatomy program will be coming by.

Are there any GCC programs you'd like to find out about? Drop in during Open Hours and let us know!

from the Onion: Grown Adult Actually Expects to be Happy!

http://www.theonion.com/articles/grown-adult-actually-expects-to-be-happy,19442/

"Frankly, science cannot explain this man," confirmed noted psychologist Dr. Eli Wasserbaum, adding that most people have their first realization that enduring happiness is an utter fallacy sometime in their late teens or early '20s, when their dreams for the future endure the first fissure in the process of eventual disintegration.

GIANT THRIVE BABIES!!!

(thanks for coming by, Liz Carter & Twins!)

March Update from Liz!

Hello Thrive folks,

Thrive is busting at the seams with creative workshops, musical events, information sessions, book groups, and field trips this month.

Creative and cultural offerings abound! Ongoing monthly events include our Book & Journal Writing Group (3/9, 7-9 pm), the Music Exchange (3/29, 7-9 pm), and our third Thrive: Show (3/20, 4 pm), which will feature more great local talent.

Weekly offerings include a Knitting Group that meets every Monday evening from 7-9, and the Franklin County Drawing Posse on Sundays from 1-4. All skill levels are welcome!

Lou's Upcycles will host a Trashionista workshop on 3/30, 7-9 pm, for 12 lucky participants. Sign up is going on now--liz@thethriveproject.org.

We'll be taking a field trip to the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown on 3/11; thanks to a new Thrive Arts fund set up by some generous supporters, we are able to offer this trip, which includes museum tickets, transportation and lunch, to our Thrivers for free. Sign up now! We are planning a trip to MASS MoCA in April. Stay tuned for a date!

Our Step Zero: Building Resilience One Step at a Time series features an interactive, hands-on workshop on Fun Food Preservation (3/16, 7-9 pm), and a showing of the documentary "Food, Inc." on 3/28, 7-9 pm.

To better help our Thrivers prepare for upcoming job interviews, we are offering a Dress for Success program (3/30, 3-5 pm), which will include a special shopping trip to the Salvation Armani to buy interview clothes, and a consultation with fashion expert Jamie Berger.

For people interested in learning more about getting health insurance through Mass Health under new state laws, we are offering an information session that will assist people in all aspects of applying and setting up initial visits to the doctor and dentist on 3/14, 7-9 pm.

And finally, we are pleased to include a new monthly series this spring, a GCC Spring Sampler, which will bring representatives from the admissions and financial aid offices, as well as a revolving array of faculty members, so that participants can not only get information and help with the application and transitions process, as well as explore career possibilities and make the connections between furthering one's education and creating opportunities for the future at GCC.

All programs are free and open to all. Thanks to our workshop facilitators for generously donating their time and energy! And thanks to all Thrive folk who infuse our space during open hours and events with such great energy.

We also offer one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, career, academic, & life coaching during our open hours and by special appointment.

Hope to see you soon!

I've attached our March calendar, as well as our March programs list. Thanks in advance for helping us spread the word about what we do, what we offer, and how people can benefit by being a part of the Thrive community.

Happy March,
Liz
